RemNote

Note-taking with built-in flashcards, spaced repetition and AI study tools.

Visit remnote.com

RemNote is a note-taking and study app that combines an outlining editor with flashcards, spaced repetition and AI study tools. You write notes, turn parts of them into cards, and review those cards on a schedule the app builds for you.

It runs on desktop, iOS and Android, and notes can be written offline and synced later. The company says it is trusted by more than 1,000,000 students, and it was founded in 2020 at MIT. Beyond studying, it is positioned as a long-term knowledge base with folders, references, tags and tables.

What RemNote does

Flashcards written inside your notes

Typing Question == Answer in the editor creates a flashcard on the spot, so cards stay attached to the notes they came from. Formats include question/answer, image occlusion, fill-in-the-blank, multiline, concept and multiple choice cards.

Spaced repetition and an exam scheduler

RemNote schedules each card for review at the point you are about to forget it, and cards you find difficult come back more often. You can enter an exam date and get a daily list of what to study.

PDF and slide annotation

Upload PDFs and slides and annotate them with highlights, drawings and shapes next to your own notes. The free plan allows 3 annotated documents.

AI study tools

The AI can generate flashcards, quizzes and summaries from notes, PDFs or slide decks, and every card can show an explanation. An AI tutor chat answers questions about your notes, and there is image-to-text conversion and a lecture recorder on the top plan.

Handwritten notes and tables

On a tablet you can take handwritten lecture notes, add sketches and convert them to text. Tables and databases let you organise notes, projects and cards in customisable views.

Search, references and offline use

Instant search, folders, references and tags keep a large note collection navigable. Notes work offline and sync across desktop and mobile when you reconnect.

How to use RemNote

  1. 1Create a free account and pick the desktop app or the iOS/Android app.
  2. 2Write notes in the outlining editor, or upload a PDF or slide deck to annotate.
  3. 3Turn key lines into cards by typing Question == Answer, or highlight text and press { for a fill-in-the-blank card.
  4. 4Set your exam date so RemNote builds a daily review schedule, then work through the cards it surfaces.
  5. 5On a paid plan, use the AI tools to generate cards, quizzes and summaries from your notes or PDFs.

Popular for

Exam revision for students

Students turn lecture notes and PDFs into flashcards, set an exam date, and follow the daily review schedule instead of re-reading material.

Lecture and reading notes

Handwritten notes on a tablet, annotated slides and typed outlines let you capture a course in one place rather than across several apps.

Memorising diagrams and definitions

Image occlusion cards hide parts of a diagram for anatomy and similar subjects, while fill-in-the-blank and concept cards cover definitions and lists.

A long-term personal knowledge base

Folders, tags, references and tables support notes that carry on past a single course into ongoing study or work projects.
